Saturdays from 1:00-2:30 pm drop in to experience art (no registration required)

Guided by experienced regional artist Jennie Clark, parents and children are invited to explore a variety of weekly art activities and media in OMAH’s public education room.

Please note that parents/guardians are required to attend with their children.


 

Weekend Workshops (ages 18+)

Sky, Clouds and Water with artist Elke Scholz

Come and play with watercolours while focusing on the landscape in front of you. In this 6-hour workshop, participants will be taught basic sky, cloud and water techniques. Participants will be able to keep a memory of their day. All levels are welcome!

African Djembe Drum with artist John Proctor

In this one-day workshop, participants will assemble an African style Djembe drum. Using a solid wooden shell, goat skin will be attached with rings and drum rope. In the morning, while the goat skin heads are soaking, participants will prepare their drum shells, wrap and rope their rings and prepare everything needed for final assembly in the afternoon. Instructions for final tuning (after the skins have dried) using the mail-weave will be given.

Everyone is invited to participate in a drumming circle.

Mosaics with artist Tanya MacFarlane

In this one-day workshop, participants will create a mosaic for their home or garden. Students will have an opportunity to work with glass, ceramic or porcelain while making a 10”x10” mirror or 10”x10” garden plaque. Spend the morning creating your design, selecting your materials and learning how to cut tiles and glass. After lunch you will grout your piece, ensuring that you have learned all the skills required to continue mosaics on your own.

Concertina Photo Album with artist Hannah Lin
In this one-day workshop, participants will learn to make their own unique photo albums! Hannah Lin will guide you through the sculptural book called the concertina. This hardcover book can open up to display several photos at once.

Bushel Basket with artist Carey Nicholson

In this one-day workshop, participants will weave their own bushel basket, approximately 11” x 11” in size. Using space-dyed rattan reed, participants will create this colourful basket that can be used to hold a variety of small items such as fruit, mittens, magazines, toys and more.

Weekday Workshops (ages 15+)

Introduction to Watercolour I
with local artist Richard VanderMeer

In this 3-hour workshop, participants will execute a series of exploratory watercolour exercises, becoming familiar with this challenging medium. Participants will complete a landscape watercolour painting while applying the techniques learned throughout the workshop.

Introduction to Watercolour II
with local artist Richard VanderMeer
In this 3-hour workshop, participants will discover even more possibilities within the medium of watercolour. Participants will create a landscape watercolour painting with a human figure from start to finish.

Workshops for Teens

PVC Pipe Drum with artist John Proctor

In this 3-hour workshop, participants will make a modular drum with a goat skin head that converts from a 24-inch African style hand drum to a 12-inch middle eastern style doumbec using PVC pipe and fittings. Participants will also have time to paint and decorate their drum!!

2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Participants are invited to a drumming circle using their new drum.

Workshops for Kids

Papermaking with artist Jennie Clark
Papermaking is a fun process that offers great results. In this 3-hour workshop, participants will use natural materials, recycled newspaper and their imaginations to make original and beautiful paper art work.

Call the Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) at 705-326-2159, or drop in and visit us at 30 Peter Street South, Orillia, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and complete a registration form.

Payment of fees to OMAH guarantees your registration. Due to demand, participants are not considered registered until fees are fully paid. All workshops have limited enrollments!

OMAH reserves the right to cancel any workshop if the minimum number of participants required have not registered 72 hours before the day the workshop is offered. Refunds will be issued for cancelled workshops. Refunds will not be issued for missed workshops, except in the case of an emergency. Illness is not considered an emergency without a letter from a doctor.

All information regarding the workshops is subject to change by OMAH.

Materials:
All materials are provided by the instructors. The cost of materials varies according to the length and type of workshop. Please see program guide description.

HOW TO REGISTER

Complete one registration form per child. Payment of applicable fees to the Orillia Museum of Art & History guarantees reservation. Due to demand, participants are not considered registered until fees are fully paid. Medical information must be completed for registration to be deemed complete and acceptable. Register early! All programs have limited enrollment.

We reserve the right to cancel any program or day if the minimum number of participants required has not registered by the Wednesday before the week the program is offered. Refunds will be issued for cancelled courses. Refunds are not issued if a child misses a program or day unless it is for emergency reasons. Illness is not considered an emergency reason.

WHAT TO WEAR


All participants should wear old clothes or bring a shirt in which to paint. Art workshops can be messy! We try to use water-soluble media, but cannot guarantee that clothing will not get stained.

MATERIALS

Materials are provided for all workshops unless otherwise stated.

SNACKS and LUNCH

Snacks and lunch are NOT provided. Children should bring both and something to drink. There will be a breaks during the session.

 

BEHAVIOUR

We try our best to ensure art workshops and day camps are a positive experience for everyone. Participants will be exposed to a wide variety of activities that encourage sharing and co-operation, while allowing them to utilize their imagination and creativity.

Participants are expected to be courteous and respectful of others at all times. For the enjoyment of all participants, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
