SUMMARY:ORILLIA: THEN & NOW
DESCRIPTION:October 6 – September 13\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n Orillia: then & now\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Places stay the same\, but buildings come and go. Showcasing photographs of iconic places in Orillia as they once were while contrasting with current photographs by Samantha Vessios\, puts history into context. History is all around us and exists within our everyday lives. We need to remember our history through our stories and preservation of objects and historic buildings. Learn about iconic places as they were “then” and what they are “now.” With the embellishments removed\, Duck’s subject matter are simple random objects such as kitchen scraps or a greasy pan or common people who have no claim to major positions of power.  The pieces draw upon this history humourously.  Harley Duck is a graduate of the University of Guelph\, where he received a BA in English and Studio Art in 2021\, he is also currently completing a Museum and Gallery Studies Ontario College Graduate Certificate from Georgian College.   \n\n It is often when we go to bed at night that a parent tells us a fairy tale.  Lying on our pillow listening to the voice of someone we love soothes us and puts us to sleep. We are in dreamland! \nIn the Algonquin and Metis tradition\, moccasins not only put our feet on but also connect us to the earth. On special occasions\, we are often given a new pair of moccasins with beadwork to signify the importance of the occasion but also to keep us grounded in life. \nStorytelling and traditional dress are part of many cultures. It is a common link. The “Moccushion” series consists of a dozen stories drawn from Metis families across Ontario. Their construction is made with a variety of leather\, fur\, wool\, embroidery and various beads chosen specifically for the tale. In addition to interpreting a traditional tale\, they show us some things about distinct Metis art styles. -Bertin \nNathalie Bertin is a multidisciplinary visual artist from Toronto\, Ontario. She has lived near the shores of Lake Nosbonsing\, between North Bay and Mattawa\, since 2021. She is of French\, Metis and Algonquin ancestry with roots in Trois Rivieres (QC)\, Michilimakinac (USA) & Nipissing (ON).  \n\n
