upcoming exhibit\, “Summer on the Lake” we’ll be displaying a selection of artefacts from our collection that symbolize some of Orillia’s most famous features\, the lakes.  From fishing at the Narrows to rowing races\, from waterskiing to swimming to dancing at the Pav\, Orillians have been enjoying their time at the lake for hundreds of years.  We’re going to celebrate those favourite summertime Heart. Spirit. is the theme of the Ontario Society of Artists 2022 anniversary year as we celebrate 150 years of artistic practice. \nIn this members’ exhibition\, Conversations\, artists were invited to research the rich legacy of our members from 1872 onwards. They were asked to dialogue with artists of the past or contemporary members whose works spark resonance or difference in relation to their own practice. Artists were challenged to interrogate\, transform\, reformulate\, and relate to works by other OSA artists. \nConversations require breath\, heart\, and spirit. The heart listens\, the spirit learns\, and breath supports life. Ideas pass from artist to artist\, permeating culture and vice versa. We share and learn. \nConnections abound through time between our current artist members and the rich legacy of the past. Some members are second generation OSA\, while others are students of past notable artists and teachers. Family connections are interwoven\, with Percy James Robinson discovered as a great-uncle of Sue Ennis. Cheryl Bailey’s research investigated Thomas Mower Martin\, who gave her grandfather a painting as a wedding present in 1910. \nIn Sue Gamble’s Unmarked\, we see Mount Paul (also rendered by A.Y. Jackson) with a flight of 215 orange butterflies to symbolize the unmarked graves of Indigenous children. \nDominique Prevost was attracted by the textures of Helen Frances Gregor’s weaving\, her colour shifts\, horizon lines\, and the way she draped and folded her material. Dominique chose to work in three dimensions in Japanese paper\, her signature material. \nThe Canary Restaurant\, is a revisiting of Frederick Hagan’s subject matter from 1938 by his student\, Kim Atkins. The city has changed and the diner still exists in an entirely different urban context. \nBanff\, Tom Ashbourne’s sculpture\, is made with re-purposed steel plow blades\, re-creating a mountain landscape painting by A.Y. Jackson. \nLinda Finn was inspired to use cast paper\, celebrating growth as Renewal\, in her dialogue with Dora de Pédery-Hunt\, a Hungarian immigrant renowned for her cast metal work in medallions in the 1960’s. \nOSA works are found throughout Canada in public collections. Our anniversary publication\, Breath. Heart. Spirit. The OSA 150 Years. reproduces works from the National Gallery\, Robert McLaughlin\, Hamilton\, Winnipeg\, Vancouver\, and Homer Watson galleries as well as the Canadian War Museum collection\, and Museum London. Paul was a novelist\, playwright\, screenwriter\, filmmaker\, musician and educator.  \n2021 Winner: Ava Roth\, Encaustic Sewing\, Silver Leaf \n \nFriends of Paul’s selected Ava Roth for her encaustic and sewn work\, Encaustic Sewing\, Silver Leaf. They said that the work is an evocative and textured bridge that links a primary encaustic image with carefully juxtaposed thread work. It resists a merely static appreciation by exploring and evoking tensions between permanent and temporary\, between natural and human made and also between past and present.Her multi-disciplinary visioning is amplified by her ability to draw from these tensions to create a new and unique perspective. \n\n\nThe Kevin J. Batchelor Emerging Artist Award: $1000\nThis award has been graciously funded by the Batchelor family upon the passing of arts advocate\, Kevin J. Batchelor\, in 2015.  Batchelor was a local music teacher and artist. The Kevin J. Batchelor Emerging Artist Award was given to an emerging artist working in either one of the 2-D mediums such as painting or drawing. \n2021 Winner: Tiffany Blaise\, New Horizon \n \nTiffany is a British Columbia based artist who has actively sought opportunities for emerging artists in the Vancouver area and internationally. Tiffany says her aim is to approach her practice in a holistic way by continuing to apprentice with other artists to work towards mastering techniques and refining concepts\, embarking on artist residencies to source inspiration by being immersed in different environments\, producing bodies of artwork that explore the link between landscape and emotion. \nJennifer and Kelly Batchelor remarked on Tiffany’s work\, New Horizon:The representation of sea and sky was quite compelling. The intensity and majesty of nature in its most elemental form was captured. \n  \n  \nThe Jurors’ Prize: $1500\nJurors’ Prize is awarded to the artist who best exemplifies the qualities that Franklin Carmichael found ideal\, incorporating diversity in their work\, using an expressionistic style\, and remaining sophisticated in their depictions of the various landscapes in our geography.  The recipient of this award should be visibly embracing\, challenging or addressing existing approaches to Canadian landscapes.  \n\n2021 Winner: Erin Fyfe Donnelly\, Act Natural 1 \n \n\nErin is a Windsor based landscape artist whose practice is an exploration into physical and social boundaries by creating work that raises issues of land-use and property. One may think they see and feel they inhabit the location while simultaneously aware they are being rejected by it. \nThe juror’s\, Martha Reeve and Deb Farquharson remarked:The first thing that struck us about this piece\, is the monochromatic orange—a colour that alerts the viewer to a hazard. In this case\, we felt the artist must be referencing the alarming rate of disappearing landscapes and ecological environments. The palette also conjures reminders of the many forest fires this summer. \nWe love the inclusion of an actual stick on a shelf beside the painting— bringing our attention to a felled tree. This often means painting quickly\, because the light changes drastically over time. Join Juliana Hawke\, on this full-day En Plein Air experience. As a group you’ll enjoy the beautiful Grant’s Woods Nature Reserve\, feed off each other’s enthusiasm for plein air painting and learn a few techniques along the way. \n\nJuliana will talk about Franklin Carmichael’s work along with that of some other artists\, their different watercolour techniques\, the perils of painting outside (!) and give some instruction before participants tackle their own masterpieces.  \nBox Lunch Included.
