SUMMARY:Views from a Canoe
DESCRIPTION: Tuesday\, March 16\, 2021 to Saturday\, October 16\, 2021   \n \n \n \n \n \n VIEWS FROM A CANOE\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This exhibition\, Views from a Canoe\, comes from a more local journey. Spending much of his time now on Lake Dalrymple\, Harry enjoys the solitude of time spent in his canoe where he can quietly glide undetected\, capturing both wildlife and nature alike. The photographs in Views from a Canoe are just a snapshot of what Harry has managed to capture with his camera over the last 80 years of paddling. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n Tuesday\, March 16\, 2021 to Saturday\, October 16\, 2021   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Categories\nOutdoors\, Paddling \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n STATEMENT \nFor me\, a canoe is poetry in motion unless\, of course\, you arepaddling some rapids. Then\, it is exciting\, risky\, demanding andskill-testing. Together with my wife Marian\, I have paddled riversacross Canada\, Namibia and Australia. These rivers all havetheir own stories. My photos capture the various moods andmemories of paddling. \nMay you be lucky enough to find a totally uninhabited lake orriver to understand and feel it. – Harry Hall SUMMARY:The History of Medicine in Orillia
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 16\, 2021 to Saturday\, October 16\, 2021 \n \n \n \n \n \n THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE IN ORILLIA\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This exhibit was curated and designed by Emily Faulkner\, a Young Canada Works intern from the Georgian College Museum and Gallery Studies Program \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\nTuesday\, March 16\, 2021 to Saturday\, October 16\, 2021 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Categories\nMedicine \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Medical history is convoluted: full of intrigue\, missteps\, and miraculous breakthroughs.  There is always something interesting about seeing an old bottle of medicine or a historical medical instrument. Healthcare in Canada is largely a standard service in our lives\, so many people neglect to think about how it got to where it is today. It is important to take a moment\, especially nowadays\, to appreciate the struggles and advancements made in medicine\, which is the goal of our new Medical Exhibit.  The Medical Exhibit showcases artifacts from OMAH’s permanent collection that relate to Orillia’s local medical history. The exhibit explores the history of the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital (OSMH)\, including images of the hospital through the ages\, the Orillia School of Nursing\, which ran from 1910 until 1974\, and the career of local doctor\, Trevor McLennan (1907 – 1980) who served in WWII and ran the radiology department at the OSMH. The most exciting part is the apothecary corner\, where you can view medical bottles for a wide range of ailments and historical treatments. We invite you to step back in time with us as you visit this new exhibit on display from now until late June in OMAH’s main lobby.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Orillia Museum of Art & History would like to offer a warm thank you to Dapper Depot\, one of our local downtown businesses\, who lent 2 of their mannequins for use in this exhibition. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The museum is also grateful to Dora E. Noy\, Gwenneth Wallace and Marion Ronwyn Ingraham (McLennan)\, whose donations comprise the majority of our medical collection.  Through their generosity they made this exhibition possible. SUMMARY:Carmichael Canadian Landscape Exhibition: Tradition Transformed
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Carmichael Canadian Landscape Exhibition: Tradition Transformed was created in recognition of Group of Seven member\, Franklin Carmichael\, who was born in Orillia. Now in its 19th year\, this juried show calls on artists from across the country to submit work that embraces\, challenges\, comments\, critiques\, echoes\, challenges\, re-works or strengthens images\, perceptions and interpretations of Canadian landscape through the artist’s chosen medium. Heavily rooted in Carmichael’s beliefs on traditionalism and classical modes of artistic expression\, Carmichael himself was very much invested in contemporary artistic styles having been inspired by his native Canadian surroundings. \n\n 2020 Artists Michael Black David Brandy Diana Braun-Woodbury Paige Bromby Caleb Butler Mike Callaghan Lisa Clark Dalla Coletta Sarah Cullen Rosellen D’Agostino Deborah Danelley Adele Derkowski Claire Domitric Maria Drazilov Michael Drolet Amir Farokhpour Janice Feist Tanya Fenkell Marie Finkelstein Adam Gagnon Larry Glazar Lori Goldberg Anita Granger Jude Griebel Julie Grimaldi Cathy Groulx Martha Henrickson Shaney Herrmann David Holden Stevan Ioannidis Alex Jack Gita Karklins Justin Langille Marie Lannoo Bethany LeBlonc Cathryn MacFarlane Monique Martin Ingrid Mayrhofer David McClyment Alan McCord Greg McCullough Sue A. SUMMARY:She Shoots...She Scores
DESCRIPTION:She Shoots… She Scores will explore the history and legacy of women’s hockey as well as highlight women who have broken down barriers in a sport that has long been dominated by men. This exhibition\, developed with resources from the Hockey Hall of Fame is an exploration of intangible cultural heritage\, which is an evolution through the generations\, much like the development of amateur\, university\, professional and international women’s hockey.\n\nUNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage as “traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants\, such as oral traditions\, performing arts\, social practices\, rituals\, festive events\, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts.” Sport is part of our lived experience and contributes to the growth and development of a community. While men were developing their skills at hockey\, so were Canadian women\, forming small teams primarily at universities in the late 19th century. The first photograph of a woman’s game was taken in 1890 at Rideau Hall\, Ottawa and featured the Governor General (and namesake of the Stanley Cup)’s daughter\, Isobel Stanley\, wielding a hockey stick. Women have played ever since. She Shoots… She Scores will feature stories\, equipment\, and photographs from the past 100+ years.\n

SUMMARY:HUNTER GAMES: SADKO HADZIHASANOVIC
DESCRIPTION:In my art practice\, I am interested in camouflaging history and ideology in an ironic and often humorous way. Since I moved to Canada in 1993 I was fascinated with the new culture I found myself in and I explored a lot in the area of pop-culture and consumerism.\n\nAs an artist\, I like to explore the construction of identity\, and its cultural and social implications. With an extensive and ongoing portraiture-based body of work\, I use an array of references to popular culture.  I am interested in referring to the environment of my upbringing in Bosnia and the relatively exotic vacation paradise of Cuba and it’s political undertones as well as Canadian culture. I paint works that contrast a childhood lived under the threat of war and an unhurried North American childhood lived without the looming presence of world affairs.\n\nI have produced a body of work\, oil paintings on copper\, video\, prints  and large paintings on canvas regarding the theme of hunting. Since hunting and guns are an issue in North American life and culture\, this body of work is relevant to many questions we pose today: the role of government in controlling the weapons\, how we educate children about guns\, the role profit plays as well as  how we contribute to the resolution of the problem that we face.\n\nThe artist appreciates the support of the Ontario Arts Council.

SUMMARY:AT RISK: TRACEY LAWKO
DESCRIPTION:Our native pollinators and their habitat are threatened.  Insect populations are declining due to habitat loss\, pesticide use and disease. 75% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to set seed and we humans get one third of our food from flowering plants.\n\nIn recent years\, Tracey has become increasingly aware of the changing patterns of the bees and butterflies in her garden and around her studio in the Niagara Escarpment.  As they move from flower to flower collecting pollen\, they enable the continuation of our food crops and flowering plants.\n\nThrough her finely stitched botanical illustrations\, she invites the viewer to consider the importance of these small creatures to our survival.
