Healthcare in Canada is largely a standard service in our lives\, so many people neglect to think about how it got to where it is today. It is important to take a moment\, especially nowadays\, to appreciate the struggles and advancements made in medicine\, which is the goal of our new Medical Exhibit.  The Medical Exhibit showcases artifacts from OMAH’s permanent collection that relate to Orillia’s local medical history. The exhibit explores the history of the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital (OSMH)\, including images of the hospital through the ages\, the Orillia School of Nursing\, which ran from 1910 until 1974\, and the career of local doctor\, Trevor McLennan (1907 – 1980) who served in WWII and ran the radiology department at the OSMH. The most exciting part is the apothecary corner\, where you can view medical bottles for a wide range of ailments and historical treatments. Spending much of his time now on Lake Dalrymple\, Harry enjoys the solitude of time spent in his canoe where he can quietly glide undetected\, capturing both wildlife and nature alike. When painting\, I celebrate the energy felt when beholding the intrinsic beauty of our world\, no matter how ugly or scary. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n IMAGE: Reminiscent of 19th century wallpaper patterns\, this hand-drawn ink wallpaper by Jill Price presents a patterning of fur and animal forms.  It will be part of a colonial parlour installation in the exhibition. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This is an exhibition that playfully speculates on how animals might choose to engage with\, frame\, label and question natural history objects held within the archives of museums.   The North American Fur Trade lasted approximately 350 years between 1530 and 1880.   The Atherley Narrows\, a site that sits between Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching\, was a source of fishing and hunting for local Indigenous people as far back as 5000 years ago.  With the advent of the fur trade and a visit by Samuel de Champlain in 1615\, the Narrows became a key site of cultural and capital exchange and led to the eventual formation of Orillia as a European settlement in 1840.  Drawing on narratives and word play based on animals hunted\, trapped\, and exchanged\, Unfurled utilizes objects and materials held within OMAH’s historical collection\, as well as objects created by Price\, to discuss how the thriving abundance of animals led to the material wealth of their prime predators\, human individuals from six continents who immigrated to Orillia to ask them these questions.  Their incredible stories of resilience and courage in the face of changing circumstances will be displayed at Paul was a novelist\, playwright\, screenwriter\, filmmaker\, musician and educator.  \n  \nThe Kevin J. Batchelor Emerging Artist Award: $1000\nThis award has been graciously funded by the Batchelor family upon the passing of arts advocate\, Kevin J. Batchelor\, in 2015.  Batchelor was a local music teacher and artist. The Kevin J. Batchelor Emerging Artist Award was given to an emerging artist working in either one of the 2-D mediums such as painting or drawing. \n  \nThe Jurors’ Prize: $1500\nJurors’ Prize is awarded to the artist who best exemplifies the qualities that Franklin Carmichael found ideal\, incorporating diversity in their work\, using an expressionistic style\, and remaining sophisticated in their depictions of the various landscapes in our geography.  The recipient of this award should be visibly embracing\, challenging or addressing existing approaches to Canadian landscapes.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Annual Carmichael Lecture with Guest Speaker Anna Hudson\nJoin Anna Hudson\, live on Zoom\, on November 17th at 7 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the speaker: \nAnna Hudson\, PhD / FRSC\, is an art historian and curator specializing in 19th and 20th-century art in Canada\, in addition to modern and contemporary circumpolar Indigenous art and performance. Hudson is a professor of Art History and Visual Culture in the School of the Arts\, Media\, Performance & Design at York University (Toronto).
