SUMMARY:Colours of Women
DESCRIPTION:An Orillia Museum of Art & History and Green Haven Shelter for Women collaboration.\n \n \n \n \n \n Admire the incredible work currently displayed at OMAH by the artist Amanta Scott celebrating visionary women from around the world. Let the inspiration from the exhibit flow through you and pick up the pen yourself to colour or draw images of the women with whom you resonate. \n \n \n \n \n \n Green Haven will be supplying colouring pages\, art supplies\, and Self-Love Hearts. This event is free\, with a recommended donation of $5 to participate in the activities. Any donations made to the event will be evenly divided between The Orillia Museum of Art & History and Green Haven Shelter for Women. \n \n \n \n \n \n The community is encouraged to embrace their artistic side while honouring women from all walks of life. Visitors can choose a page from the inclusive colouring sheets that they feel a connection to and their finished work will be on display at the museum. Women are also invited to take a moment to reflect on what they love most about themselves by filling out one of the Self-Love Hearts. \nPrompts include: I am _____\, I can _____\, I will _____\, I love my _____\, I deserve _____\, I have _____. \n \n Click here to read the press release\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “International Women’s Day is a day to honour the women in our community. The Colours of Women event is an opportunity to bring women together to share their love for themselves and to empower others in Orillia. We stand stronger with powerful and resilient women beside us.” \n– Norma Alford\, Executive Director of Green Haven Shelter for Women \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Eyeing Medusa\, Amanta Scott’s solo exhibition\, held in the Mulcahy Family Gallery will serve as a powerful backdrop to the Colours of Women event. Since the museum’s mission is to provide inclusive space to engage community\, inspire creativity\, and celebrate culture\, by exploring art and history\, we think this event is a perfect fit with ample opportunity to discuss issues that are rooted in history and still powerfully present.” \n– Ninette Gyorody\, Executive Director of Orillia Museum of Art & History \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for more information about Green Haven Shelter for Women

SUMMARY:BEYOND THE FENCE: Christine Mack and David Hill
DESCRIPTION:This is an exhibit about acknowledging change from one state to another\, specifically in reference to our gardens. \nChris revels in the colour and life found in these gardens\, as they grow and changethrough the seasons. Her photographs allude to the garden\, it’s marvels reinterpreted into magical images\, themselves full of joy and movement. \nDavid has focused more on the decay that happens in every garden. His assemblages are constructed with objects left behind\, each with their own attached memories. Yet within a new arrangement these pieces set up a challenge for the viewer to create fresh stories and find alternative feelings. \nBEYOND THE FENCE encourages us to expand our view outside the box\, further than the frame and reap the exciting ideas that lie there. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Christine: \nChristine Mack has been a constant student of photography. At  age 15\, her parents gave Christine her first camera. Embarking upon  what was to be her photography journey\, she began to see the world  through the eyes of the camera. Christine continued on to formally  study photography at York University and Humber College while  studying painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art. It was  through persistence and determination that she continued to produce  and exhibit photographic images.   \n As a Photo Educator\, Christine taught photography classes as well  as workshops but also continued to grow personally as a  photographer by exhibiting work in a number of galleries throughout  Toronto and Ontario.  \n Christine has always liked alternative photo based processes that  blur the distinction between photography and painting. They provide  the freedom to move beyond the traditional print and to present  another layer for the viewer to interpret and experience.  These images are a variation on that theme. Christine plays with  colour and composition interpreting the garden\, showing it in a new  light. Her backyard garden\, under a very big sky and century old trees  moved through it’s yearly life cycle; blooming and fading\, blooming  and fading. Through the language of photography\, Christine passes  on what she observed and remembered\, as an eyewitness to Mother  Nature. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About David \nDavid Hill has been surrounded by photographs since his birth in Hamilton.  \nFollowing the influence of family albums and the always present cameras his photo career took him on an interesting meander through the world of portraits\, products\, places and ultimately personal artwork. Led strongly by a desire to be creative and original\, David’s creative horizon has expanded in recent times to include assemblage.  \nAs a counterpoint the rigours and precision required in 35 + years of commercial photography\, these assemblage efforts are intuitive and free. There is a sense of Dada and Surrealism that settles in these works. No rules.  \nSince the mid 1980’s David has regularly exhibited with his wife Chris Mack and on his own. They have shown their photographs together in Toronto\, Midland and recently in Hamilton. The continuation of these efforts in recent years has unfolded for David in the form of his assemblages as they take a larger role in his artistic journey. SUMMARY:BURNER HERZOG
DESCRIPTION:January 28\, 2023 – April 15\, 2023 \n \n \n \n \n \n Burner Herzog\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Burner Herzog statement: \n“Near our home is an abandoned sawdust burner\, the last one we have been told still standing in Ontario. This abandoned burner is a ‘vestigial’ implement that the logging industry would have used regularly to incinerate the sawdust made from processing cut trees. We’ve often worked toward illuminating the idea that industry and landscape are interlinked. These abandoned industrial structures have long been a major subject matter of our art making. We believe the natural world is conceptual\, it is “culture before water\, wood\, rock” (Simon Schama) and Canada’s landscape is haunted with our industrial past. This haunting is where our work exists.” \n-Gary and Victoria \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gary Blundell was born in London\, England and immigrated to Canada in 1962.  He is a geologist with a science degree from the University of Waterloo.  Gary is a recipient of many grants including the Chalmers Fellowship Arts award from the Ontario Arts Council.  His has exhibited across Canada and England.  His work can be found in collections such as The Art Gallery of Peterborough\, The Art Gallery of Sudbury\, St. Michaels College in Toronto\, and the National Coal Mining Museum of England among others. SUMMARY:GREAT TAIT: The True Story of Orillia’s First Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:Orillia of the 1870s was a place of great potential: a place where a person who was willing to work hard could make a name for themselves. Andrew Tait was one person who did just that\, and is likely to have been Orillia’s first millionaire as a result. In “Great Tait: The True Story of Orillia’s First Millionaire”\, we examine the life of this self-made businessman and the legacy he left behind.
