SUMMARY:Made in Orillia: The Toys that Built Childhood
DESCRIPTION:January 31\, 2026 to August 29\, 2026 \n \n \n \n \n \n Made in Orillia:\nThe Toys that Built Childhood\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Made in Orillia: The Toys that Built Childhood explores how locally produced toys shaped play\, identity\, and childhood in the mid-20th century. Drawing from the Orillia Museum of Art & History’s collection\, the exhibition highlights toys produced by companies such as Tudhope Specialties Limited (later Orillia Tudhope Anderson Company or OTACO) and Lloyd Baby Carriages. \nFrom miniature ovens\, pressed-steel trucks\, and doll carriages\, the exhibition shows how toys reflected the social values of their time. Set against the backdrop of postwar prosperity and the looming Cold War\, these toys carried messages about gender\, work\, family life\, and consumer culture. While designed for play\, they also mirrored adult expectations of who children were and who they were expected to be. \nBy placing Orillia’s toy industry within a broader historical and cultural context\, this exhibition invites visitors to consider how toys shape childhood experiences\, influence ideas about gender\, and continue to reflect the world in which they are made. \n SUMMARY:From Hand to Heirloom: The Art of Craft
DESCRIPTION:April 18\, 2026 – January 8\, 2027 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFrom Hand to Heirloom:\nThe Art of Craft\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n From Hand to Heirloom: The Art of Craft\, explores the history and artistry of craft practices traditionally led by women\, showing how needlework objects like quilts\, embroidery\, and beadwork carry beauty\, meaning\, and cultural stories. This exhibition highlights how craft intersects with fine art\, celebrates local and Indigenous makers\, and invites visitors to see the skill\, creativity\, and personal expression behind objects often overlooked as merely “useful.” Painting was always a part of her life. \n\n\n\n\nAs an adult\, she has pursued her creative passion by taking classes and workshops and otherwise expanding her talents and experience wherever and whenever she is able. Her creative influences are mainly expressive figurative artists like Jenny Savillle\, Peter Doig\, John Hartman and Chris Gwaltney. \nKathryn has been involved in various projects promoting artists and their work\, as well as humanitarian work with refugees and new Canadians. Kathryn does architectural renderings for various design\, architectural and landscaping companies. She has been active in the Orillia Streets Alive (street art) project for the past few years and has enjoyed it immensely. Public and street art holds a growing interest for her. \n\n\n\n\nTeaching is another one of Kathryn’s accomplishments and treasures. It is an honour to encourage others to overcome their apprehension\, enabling them to open to the process and express themselves creatively. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Not a Member? Join today to save on classes! \nPlease note cancellation requests received at least 2 weeks (14 days) prior to the program start date will receive a full-refund. As a young teen she was awarded scholarships to The Alberta College of Art and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Painting was always a part of her life.
