Ahsén:nase Douglas is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) painter\, children’s story book author\, educator and urban NDN with roots in Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory. He works primarily with oil on canvas and describes himself as a figurative painter whose work\, while exploring Indigenous themes\, does not follow the rigid characteristics of what is stereotypically considered “Indigenous Art” within the context of a commercial North America. \nHis culture\, he states “…is an abundant source of creative expression” that helps him to entwine traditional values and experiences within contemporary subject matter. \nThe artist’s work currently explores Indigenous identity\, culture\, perspectives and stories through the “figure” as well as characterizations. His paintings can be found within private and public collections across Canada and the United States\, as well as Australia. \nHe is self-taught with formal training in art history and visual design\, photography\, computer science\, social science and education. act\, exploring new materialism in helping to dismantle colonial\, capitalist\, and patriarchal approaches to the land.  Jill Price has previously exhibited at OMAH in our Annual Women’s Day Art Show \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n IMAGE: Reminiscent of 19th century wallpaper patterns\, this hand-drawn ink wallpaper by Jill Price presents a patterning of fur and animal forms.  It will be part of a colonial parlour installation in the exhibition. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This is an exhibition that playfully speculates on how animals might choose to engage with\, frame\, label and question natural history objects held within the archives of museums.   The North American Fur Trade lasted approximately 350 years between 1530 and 1880.   The Atherley Narrows\, a site that sits between Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching\, was a source of fishing and hunting for local Indigenous people as far back as 5000 years ago.  With the advent of the fur trade and a visit by Samuel de Champlain in 1615\, the Narrows became a key site of cultural and capital exchange and led to the eventual formation of Orillia as a European settlement in 1840.  Drawing on narratives and word play based on animals hunted\, trapped\, and exchanged\, Unfurled utilizes objects and materials held within OMAH’s historical collection\, as well as objects created by Price\, to discuss how the thriving abundance of animals led to the material wealth of their prime predators\, human beings. \n \n \n \n \n \n Now in its 19th year\, this juried show calls on artists from across the country to submit work that embraces\, challenges\, comments\, critiques\, echoes\, challenges\, re-works or strengthens images\, perceptions and interpretations of Canadian landscape through the artist’s chosen medium. It showcased 90 works by 60 artists from across Ontario\, in fabric\, paper\, yarn\, thread and mixed media materials. The goal of the exhibition is to raise the profile\, awareness and acceptance of fibre art as a fine art form. A selection of40 of these pieces form a smaller version that travel to museums and galleries across the province. This exhibition is organized by Fibrations. Fibrations is a not-for-profit organization originally founded to promote the work of fibre artists and quilt makers through both independent exhibitions and projects\, and in connection with other artistic events such as musical performances. The primary focus of the group over the last several years has become Fibre Content.
