The back of the Water Filtration Plant faces Lake Couchiching, abuts Couchiching Beach Park, and is only a short distance from the Port of Orillia. The Port welcomes over 5000 boats to its slips annually, and is a busy gateway to the City of Orillia along the Trent Severn Waterway.
This call for submissions is part of a larger public art project for the City of Orillia that includes six other locations depicted in the Map below.
Theme: CROSSROADS, CONNECTIONS, and INTERSECTIONS
This call for submissions is part of a larger public art project for the City of Orillia, which encourages artists to creatively interpret the theme: CROSSROADS, CONNECTIONS, and INTERSECTIONS. The theme builds on the City’s strategic location along the shores of Lakes Couchiching and Simcoe, and the Trent-Severn Waterway. It is the heart of the four communities of Oro-Medonte, Ramara, Severn and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation; Highways 11 and 12 its arteries leading you anywhere you want to go in Canada and beyond.
These crossroads, connections, and intersections breathe life into the Orillia area. They bring together visitors and residents and are the very reason Orillia has been a gathering place for Indigenous peoples for more than 5000 years.
Submissions should be the artist’s visual interpretation of the words, Biindigen/Welcome, reflecting the importance, benefits and opportunities of building a better future for all through inclusion, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Bases and interpretive signage will be provided by the APPC in consultation with Artists.
Timeline, budget and fine print
Original works of art must be two dimensional of a medium of the artist’s choice. The chosen artist will be invited to provide their final submission as a digital file (files must be 300 dpi at full size (as-is), or directly on alupanel.
Digital submissions will be professionally printed on alupanel and must maintain its integrity when scaled to approximately 10’ high by 40’ wide.
Those looking to work on alupanel must use a high-adhesion primer, artist quality paint such as Golden or Nova Colour and anti-graffiti clear coat, latex based, urethane with UV protector to ensure the quality and longevity of the work.
The cost of the alupanel, along with installation, will be covered by the APPC.
Artist Fee: Up to $6,500 (inclusive of 50% of the non-recoverable portion of HST)
Site visit: Available upon request
Application Deadline: Monday, September 26, 2022
Award: Wednesday, November 9, 2022
Project Completion Date: Wednesday, February 15, 2023
Anticipated Installation Date: Friday, March 31, 2023 (subject to change based on conditions)
The total project budget for the mural, with alupanel, installation, shipping and artist fees, is not to exceed $15,000.
Submission Requirements

2-3 images/sketches of the proposed work (The entire work does not need to be illustrated at this stage).

3-5 images of previously completed work that best reflects your proposal, accompanied by a list detailing title, date, medium and location if applicable.

Artist Statement describing the subject and context of your mural idea (250 words maximum).

CV or resume including current contact information and outlining previous artistic experience.

Proposed Artist Fee, not to exceed the maximum Artist Fee listed in the call (must include whether the artist will provide a digital file or work with alupanel).
