ART 101: Drawing and Painting Basics

Wednesday afternoons in May, come to OMAH to get creative. Over 4 sessions, our artist instructors will gently guide you through the process of creating four masterpieces, even if you have never touched a paintbrush or held a stick of charcoal.  We will cover all the basics of  drawing and painting. With Art 101 at OMAH, you will get a crash course in materials, art-making, and terminology.  Perfect for beginners or for those who would like a refresher course.

 

All materials will be provided. Just bring yourself!

4 SESSIONS

Session 1: Introduction to Art  

Wednesday May 4, from 1-3  with Kathryn Kaiser

 

In this session, participants will learn the basic elements and principles of design, general drawing techniques and have a guided discussion at how to look and look at and critically analyze a work of art.

 

Session 3: Introduction to Acrylic Painting 

Wednesday May 18 from 1-3 with Barb Simmons

In this session participants will study the colour wheel,  colour mixing and colour theory while creating a landscape using different brush and palette knife techniques.  The focus for this session will be on colour, balance, movement and texture.

Session 2: Introduction to Drawing and the Human Form

Wednesday May 11 from  1-3 with Kathryn Kaiser

 

Building on knowledge from session one,  participants will now dive deeper into drawing techniques learning cross hatching, pointillism, and shading. From a live nude model, participants will learn blind contours, timed gestural sketches, the basic human form and human proportions

Session 4: Introduction to Watercolour Painting

 Wednesday May 25 from 1-3 Hilary Slater

This session will focus on watercolour painting and techniques such as a wash, graded wash, variegated wash, wet on wet, drybrush, and the application of other mediums (salt, wax resist), through a simple still life.
