About the Instructor:

Joanne Mohan joined Parklane in 2011 as a Landscape Designer. As she grew up in a family landscape construction and garden centre business in Ireland, she has an appreciation for the family business dynamic. Joanne completed a degree in Property Economics, a Master in Landscape Architecture, and a certificate in Ecology in Ireland and has brought this knowledge and experience to Parklane. Joanne worked in Ireland as a landscape designer, completing projects for both residential and commercial clients, and maintaining an Integrated Constructed Wetland. She considers the use of plants as an important aesthetic element in a garden and encourages the use of native and naturalized planting schemes to ensure a balance between the garden’s ecology and environment.

Joanne is also a therapeutic horticultural practitioner, offering educational programs to homeowners, youth, and seniors on topics such as plant therapy, climate-resilient gardening, and sustainable practices that promote a healthier environment through plants and our gardens. She understands the value of both, and how they benefit us mentally, physically, and socially. Joanne encourages everyone to engage with plants, acknowledging that even a small container with one or two plants can provide therapeutic value in our daily lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any artistic experience?

No experience is necessary! This workshop is designed for beginners and anyone who enjoys being creative. Parklane Landscapes will guide you through each step, making it easy to create a beautiful botanical artwork using pressed flowers and foliage.

What is pressed petal art?

Pressed petal art is the practice of preserving flowers and leaves by pressing them flat, then arranging them into decorative designs. It’s a relaxing and rewarding way to celebrate nature while creating artwork that can be displayed and enjoyed for years to come.

What will I make during the workshop?

Each participant will create their own unique botanical artwork using a curated selection of pressed flowers, leaves, and natural materials. Because every composition is different, no two finished pieces will be exactly alike, giving you a personalized work of art to take home.

Are all materials included?

Yes! All materials and supplies are included in the registration fee. Just bring your creativity—we’ll provide everything else.

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little paint on. While acrylic paint is water-based, it can stain some fabrics.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is ideal for adults and older teens who enjoy art, nature, or learning new creative techniques. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist, you’ll find plenty of inspiration.

Who is the instructor?

The workshop is led by Joanne Mohan, Sustainable Landscape Designer and Therapeutic Horticultural Practitioner with Parklane Landscapes. Joanne combines her expertise in plants, ecology, and art to create engaging, hands-on workshops that celebrate creativity and the natural world.

Where is the workshop held?

The workshop takes place at the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH) in downtown Orillia, Ontario.

Is registration required?

Yes. Space is limited to ensure everyone has plenty of room and individual instruction. Advance registration is recommended.

Can I become a member to save on this workshop?

Yes! OMAH members receive discounted pricing on many workshops and programs. Becoming a member is a great way to save while supporting local arts and culture.
