THE CANADIAN LANDSCAPE THROUGH NEW PERSPECTIVES
Exhibition Details
The exhibition was established in recognition of Franklin Carmichael, renowned Canadian landscape artist and member of the Group of Seven, who was born in Orillia. Inspired by the landscapes of Northern Ontario, Carmichael frequently travelled throughout the region, capturing its distinctive character in paintings and watercolours.
Tradition Transformed invited contemporary artists to explore and reinterpret the Canadian landscape through their own perspectives, experiences and artistic practices.

This year’s jurors were Tanya Cunnington, an artist, curator and arts professional from Kirkland Lake and a community member of Rama First Nation, and Bewabon Shilling, an Ojibway painter from Rama First Nation whose work is inspired by the landscapes and communities around Lake Couchiching and the Black River. Both studied at OCAD and have exhibited their work widely. Cunnington has also served as Director of Lee Contemporary Art and Arts Programming Coordinator at OMAH, while Shilling’s work is represented by Roberts Gallery in Toronto and is held in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
