homage by donald stuart
Donald Stuart: Homage is back by popular demand after his stellar exhibition at OMAH in 2016. Homage is a collection of 40 framed neckpieces created as a celebration and tribute to Canadian women throughout the ages and across the country in a wide range of professions and contributions to our society – mothers and artists; businesswomen and philanthropists; actors and athletes; inventors and scientists. Curator, Susan Benson, CM, RCA, sketched portraits of each of the women to accompany the pieces. As a contemporary jewellery artist, Donald has used the familiar form of the necklace to explore history from a fresh perspective.
As one of Canada’s leading gold/silversmiths, Donald has earned an international reputation for his work in jewellery, hollowware and architectural installations. During his celebrated career, Stuart has received over 30 significant awards for his artistry in gold, silver, platinum, and diamonds.
Born in Toronto, Donald graduated from the Ontario College of Art (AOCA) in 1967 earning the Members of Council Travelling Scholarship. In 1981, he received a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from the School for American Crafts, Rochester, NY. In October 2002, he was awarded Canada’s highest honour, the Order of Canada (C.M.), in recognition of his illustrious career as a craftsman, and educator.
